Arkansas Voters Reject Pope County Casino, Revoking Cherokee Nation License

The recent decision by Arkansas voters to halt the planned Legends Resort and Casino in Pope County has sparked considerable discussion and debate. A noteworthy antagonist in this unfolding drama is the Choctaw Nation from Oklahoma, which reportedly invested $17 million in campaign funds to oppose the Pope County casino, possibly seeking to eliminate competition. The ambitious casino project, authorized as part of a 2018 amendment allowing up to four casinos in the state, faced continuous legal battles and opposition from its inception. Only this year did the Arkansas Racing Commission grant the license to Cherokee Nation Entertainment, who envisioned a sprawling 325-acre resort featuring a casino, entertainment venues, and a water park. The projected economic impact of over $5 billion within ten years, coupled with job creation and a boost in tourism, made the project’s cancellation a significant set back for the county.
