Boyd Gaming Acquires Land Beneath Eastside Cannery Casino

Boyd Gaming Corporation has recently taken a significant step by acquiring the land beneath the Eastside Cannery casino-hotel in Las Vegas, a property that has remained closed since the pandemic-induced shutdowns of 2020. For a reported $45 million, Boyd purchased approximately 30 acres from Cannery Casino Resorts, a move documented in property records and highlighted by The Las Vegas Review-Journal. This purchase puts an end to Boyd’s substantial annual rent payments for the land, but the company is yet to commit to reopening the shuttered casino-hotel.

Boyd had initially acquired Eastside Cannery in 2016, through a $230 million deal that also included the Cannery Casino in North Las Vegas. Despite this acquisition, Cannery Casino Resorts retained ownership of the land until Boyd’s latest transaction. Current market conditions, including an oversaturation of gaming and hospitality services in the area near Sam’s Town casino-hotel, have led Boyd executives to remain noncommittal about resuming operations at Eastside Cannery. Moreover, staffing shortages pose a significant challenge, with Boyd struggling to fill numerous job vacancies across its properties in Southern Nevada.

Boyd Gaming has, however, maintained a vigilant approach to the upkeep and security of the Eastside Cannery site, investing more than half a million dollars each month. This expenditure covers routine system upkeep, security measures, and water system management, ensuring the property remains in good condition despite its inactivity. Additionally, the casino-hotel has found utility as a venue for community and emergency services activities. Notably, during the pandemic, the site served as a food distribution center for Three Square Food Bank, and local enforcement agencies have utilized it for training exercises, including active-shooter response drills and search-and-rescue operations.

The future of Eastside Cannery continues to be uncertain. Boyd Gaming has remained tight-lipped about any concrete plans following the land acquisition. David Strow, a company spokesperson, offered no further details when queried about a potential reopening. For now, barriers still surround the property, restricting public access, and the possibility of reopening hinges on a range of factors such as financial viability, community demand, and the resolution of staffing challenges. As things stand, Eastside Cannery’s path forward remains unresolved, making it a topic of keen interest for both the local community and the broader gambling industry.
