Kentucky Reports Increase in Problem Gambling Helpline Usage

Kentucky’s gambling landscape experienced a significant shift in 2024, bringing to light some pressing issues. The state’s gambling helpline, 1-800-GAMBLER, saw a dramatic increase in activity, with contacts more than doubling compared to the previous year. This surge, attributed to the newly enacted laws permitting sports betting and a slew of promotional advertisements, underscores the complexity of gambling’s footprint on society. The Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling (KYCPG) highlighted that the increase in calls and texts led to more individuals being referred to counseling or Gamblers Anonymous, reflecting a growing awareness of gambling problems among residents. Still, it remains uncertain whether the uptick in helpline usage signals an actual rise in gambling issues or merely a heightened willingness to seek help among those affected.

Michael R. Stone, the director of KYCPG, noted that prior to the legalization of sports betting, the helpline received a modest number of calls monthly. However, once sports betting became legal in October 2023, the monthly call volume surged to 270 in 2024, representing a dramatic shift in demand for help. The aggressive advertisement campaigns focusing on responsible gambling during TV sports events played a crucial role in boosting helpline visibility. Stone believes this awareness drive encouraged many Kentuckians fighting gambling addiction to recognize their problems and seek assistance. Notably, before the legalization, Kentucky was already grappling with significant gambling issues, with roughly 64,000 residents addicted to gambling and an additional 165,000 facing gambling problems.
