A fresh nonprofit could soon be at the helm of Florida’s compulsive gambling hotline operations, ushering in a new era of support for those battling gambling addiction in the Sunshine State. Massachusetts-based Kindbridge Research Institute seems poised to secure a contract with the Florida Gaming Control Commission, according to documents recently posted on the commission’s website. This transition follows the expiration of a previous contract with the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG), leading to significant changes in the state’s approach to helping problem gamblers.

The FCCG had relied on $2 million in funding derived from fees paid by licensed slot machine facilities. However, this funding has been cut off, compelling the organization to scale back its operations significantly. Once staffed with around seven employees, the FCCG has been forced to reduce its workforce and can no longer afford to produce hard copy literature. Executive Director Jennifer Kruse highlighted an increasing demand for the helpline, spurred by the expanding gambling industry in Florida and the recent advent of online sports betting. Given these challenges, the baton seems ready to pass to Kindbridge, whose mission aligns closely with mitigating gambling-related health issues through advanced research and telehealth solutions.
