Maryland Acquires Pimlico Race Course and Plans Major Renovations

In an unprecedented move, the state of Maryland has purchased the historic Pimlico Race Course for a symbolic $1, ensuring the continued prominence of the storied track, which plays host to the Preakness Stakes. This acquisition safeguards a key leg of the Triple Crown, a cornerstone of American horse racing. Under this new arrangement, Maryland will manage Pimlico as a non-profit enterprise while paying the Stronach Group substantial fees for the rights to use the Preakness Stakes name. Governor Wes Moore has recently approved a $400 million renovation plan for Pimlico Race Course, which will be funded through state bonds. The ambitious plan includes modernizing the track facilities and ensuring that the surrounding neighborhoods benefit from the investment. Specifically, 10% of the track’s profits will be allocated to local Park Heights community development projects. While these renovations are underway, the Preakness Stakes will temporarily relocate to Laurel Park. However, by 2027, Maryland aims to have the track ready for the prestigious event, marking a new chapter in the racecourse’s storied history.

With plans for a 5,000-seat grandstand and a range of events throughout the year, Pimlico will transform into a multifaceted entertainment district. Adding to its modernization, the renovated complex will feature a new hotel and a spacious 2,000-space garage, significantly enhancing visitor experience. Interestingly, the track itself will undergo a slight rotation of 30 degrees to accommodate these new developments. Moreover, the blueprints include a state-of-the-art sportsbook, further enriching the offerings at Pimlico.
