New York Shuts Down 26 Unlicensed Sweepstakes Casinos

New York Attorney General Letitia James has recently spearheaded a significant crackdown that targets 26 online platforms identified as illegal sweepstakes casinos. These platforms had enabled users to purchase virtual coins to play casino-style games, subsequently allowing them to cash out their virtual winnings for real money. As a result of this crackdown, these online casinos have stopped operating within the state.

The initiative saw collaboration between the Attorney General’s office and the New York State Gaming Commission, uncovering that these websites were effectively permitting unregulated gambling. This circumvention of state laws meant those involved were buying virtual tokens, betting them in various games, and potentially winning cash or valuable prizes. New York state law considers any game where valuable prizes can be won as gambling. The concern over these sites centered not only on the lack of oversight but also on issues related to fairness, data security, and player protection.

Attorney General James emphasized the financial and psychological risks posed by these sweepstakes casinos, highlighting their ability to operate unchecked and their potential to foster addiction, attract underage users, and facilitate scams. Among the targeted platforms were prominent names in the sweepstakes gaming industry, such as Chumba, Global Poker, Fortune Coins, and Luckyland. These sites, despite offering free play through bonus tokens, heavily marketed the purchase of additional virtual coins that could be converted into real prizes, akin to traditional gambling models. Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner praised the Attorney General’s decisive actions, acknowledging that the sweepstakes model could foster risky gambling habits, particularly among teenagers. Her approval underscores the collective effort to maintain a secure and regulated online gaming environment in New York.
