New York Teachers’ Union Opposes Caesars’ Casino Plans

The United Federation of Teachers (UFT), one of New York’s most influential teachers’ unions, has recently voiced its staunch opposition to Caesars’ ambitious plan to establish a casino in Times Square. The proposal, set to nestle in the iconic Broadway district, has been deemed by the union’s representatives as a potential threat to the cultural and educational ecosystem that Broadway nurtures. Michael Mulgrew, the president of UFT, reiterated his concerns in a conversation with the New York Post, remarking that a casino could “dilute the distinctive power of Broadway.” Mulgrew emphasized that Broadway is not just a haven for entertainment, but a crucible of learning and professional opportunities for students. With programs that grant students access to theatrical performances, Broadway, according to Mulgrew, is an “educational goldmine” deserving of protection against the encroachment of a casino.

The opposition to Caesars’ plan doesn’t stop with the UFT. A coalition named “No Times Square Coalition,” which includes The Broadway League and thirty other industry groups, is leading the charge against the proposed casino. These groups argue that Broadway is already a cornerstone of tourism and doesn’t require the lure of a casino to thrive. Mulgrew clarified that his objections aren’t against casinos in general but against their presence in locations that already boast economic vitality.

A spokesperson for Caesars countered by suggesting that the union misunderstands the project’s intentions, asserting that a “world-class entertainment destination” could complement and enrich Times Square rather than detract from it. They even promised to supply tens of millions of dollars in Broadway tickets to students, aligning this pledge with the educational initiatives in their casino bid.
