US Self-Exclusion Service Now Available in California

Starting this August, Californians will have access to the National Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program (NVSEP), providing a straightforward method to opt out of gambling activities. This initiative extends from the program’s recent success in other states, aiming to deliver accessible self-exclusion support across the U.S. While many Tribal casinos in California already have their own self-exclusion mechanisms, the NVSEP’s new expansion focuses specifically on over 60 card rooms throughout the state. The company behind NVSEP, idPair, clarified that it doesn’t maintain an official relationship with California or its card rooms, leaving the state the autonomy to decide on integration.

Despite potential hurdles, NVSEP remains hopeful about its California initiative, thanks to its collaboration with the California Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG). Robert Jacobson, executive director of CCPG, underscores the importance of self-exclusion for those grappling with gambling addiction, noting that individuals can request card rooms to bar them from gambling or entering the premises for specific periods. However, Jacobson also highlights existing system challenges, such as the necessity for in-person enrollment, which can deter individuals or cause relapses. NVSEP’s approach aims to address these barriers by offering free notarization services, thus simplifying the self-exclusion process for individuals in need. Robert Jacobson emphasized that easing access would be critical for many Californians struggling with gambling addiction. This aligns with idPair CEO Jonathan Aiwazian’s optimistic outlook on the program’s California expansion. He reiterated NVSEP’s dedication to spreading their accessible, no-cost self-exclusion services to more bettors nationwide, using the initiative’s success in California as a stepping stone for further growth.

Jonathan Aiwazian noted that the newly announced expansion could significantly support the tens of millions of people who either reside in California or visit as tourists, offering them an effective way to guard against gambling addiction. With over 100 physical properties and 36 online operators across five different jurisdictions now covered, NVSEP is making strides in offering essential support to those wrestling with gambling addiction. This not only underscores the program’s dedication to player safety but also highlights its success in offering self-exclusion options to people who genuinely need them, thereby fostering a more responsible gambling environment.
